This infographic presents a historical perspective on the role of the US Department of Defense (DoD) Office of Undersecretary of Defense for Policy (OUSD(P)) in the context of world events since 1994 and the US national security posture. The Undersecretary for Policy has always played a pivotal role in the formation of US policy, as principal advisor to the Secretary of Defense and Deputy Secretary of Defense. SMA’s perspective was informed by in-depth interviews with many of the former Undersecretaries. The graphic is a unique perspective on the specific challenges faced by fourteen Undersecretaries or Acting Undersecretaries, the approaches they pursued, and their individual priorities.
